Tile Substrate Prep with Laticrete Underlayments

Before tile goes down, the slab needs to be flat, dry, and stable. Laticrete NXT self-leveling underlayments bring slabs to tolerance; Drytek moisture barriers protect against rising damp; crack-isolation membranes prevent substrate movement from showing through the finished tile. Las Vegas Concrete installs the right Laticrete underlayment for your slab condition and coordinates with your tile trade.

Substrate engineering

Why Laticrete Underlayments Matter Before Tile

A tile project lives or dies on the substrate. Slabs that are out of tolerance, wet, or prone to cracking will cause tile to fail no matter how good the thinset is. Laticrete underlayments solve these problems at the source: NXT SLU flattens the slab to tile-ready tolerance, Drytek manages moisture from below, and Strata Mat crack-isolation absorbs minor slab movement so it does not telegraph through the tile.

When your tile installer is specifying Laticrete thinset and grout, the underlayment should also be Laticrete. This keeps the whole-system warranty intact and ensures the substrate is engineered to match the tile adhesive on top. We assess the slab, recommend the right Laticrete product, and install it to spec so the tile trade gets a substrate that is flat, dry, and stable.

See how Laticrete waterproofing pairs with underlayments for wet zones. Compare Mapei self-leveling and Ardex self-leveling if other brands are specified.

Installation sequence

How Laticrete Underlayments Get Installed

  1. Assess slab and tile spec

We inspect the slab for flatness, moisture, and cracks, then confirm which Laticrete product fits the tile installer's requirements and the slab condition.

  2. Prepare the surface

Slab is ground or cleaned to Laticrete profile, contaminants removed, moisture tested, and the appropriate Laticrete primer applied per product spec.

  3. Install underlayment

NXT SLU is mixed and poured to target depth for flatness, or Strata Mat is laid and bonded for crack isolation, or Drytek moisture system is applied per slab conditions.

  4. Cure and hand off

Underlayment cures per Laticrete schedule. Once ready, the substrate is handed to the tile installer with documentation so the warranty path stays intact through the tile install.

Brand continuity

Keeping Laticrete System Warranty Intact

Mixing brands at the underlayment layer breaks the Laticrete system warranty, even if the tile installer uses Laticrete thinset and grout on top. The warranty path requires Laticrete from substrate prep through finish. We install Laticrete underlayments so the tile trade's warranty stays whole.

Common questions

Laticrete Underlayment Questions Answered

Product selection, moisture management, warranty, and cure times.

NXT SLU for tolerance correction. Drytek for moisture management on suspect slab substrates. Strata Mat crack-isolation for substrates with existing cracks that might telegraph. We pick based on the actual substrate condition.
Yes, the Strata Mat product is engineered to absorb minor substrate movement so cracks in the slab below do not telegraph through to the tile finish. It is essential on certain substrates.
To keep the whole-system warranty path intact. Mixing brands at the underlayment layer breaks the Laticrete system warranty even when the tile install is whole-Laticrete on top.
No, NXT is designed as substrate for tile or other finish. For polished-as-finish projects, a different product is required.
Per Laticrete spec, typically within a day or two depending on the underlayment product and conditions. The tile installer's spec also factors in; we coordinate cure handoff.

They installed Strata Mat crack-isolation on a slab with hairline movement. Two years of seasonal cycle, no telegraph through to the tile. The right tool prevented the problem.

Drytek moisture system on a basement slab that had unmanaged moisture history. The Laticrete spec saved the tile install from delaminating later. Real engineering match.

Whole-Laticrete project from substrate through grout. The customer's tile-trade-aware contractor specifically asked for Laticrete; install matched the spec. System discipline paid off.
