Most homeowners picture a walkout as simply a door at the back of the house. The concrete reality is more involved: the yard elevation has to drop to meet the door threshold, that cut slope has to be held in place, the landing outside the door has to shed water rather than collect it, and the steps climbing back up to yard grade have to be safe underfoot in every season. On a new build, the walkout elevation is set in the drawings and the concrete work follows the structural sequence. On a retrofit, we start by confirming the existing foundation wall can accept the opening, then stake the grade cut, form the retaining wall on the upslope side, pour the landing, and build the steps. The landing is formed with a deliberate pitch away from the door so rain and snowmelt move toward the drainage outlet rather than pooling at the threshold.
Drainage is not an afterthought here. The low point of every walkout cut needs a planned exit, whether that connects to the property storm system or daylights through a graded swale. Confirm elevations and stake the cut
We review the engineered drawings, verify the door threshold elevation against existing grade, locate the drainage low point, and stake the cut boundary and landing footprint before any excavation begins.
Excavate and retain the slope
The grade is cut to the target elevation. The upslope face is retained with a poured concrete wall or block per the engineer's specification, with drainage stone placed behind the wall before backfill.
Form, pour, and finish landing and steps
The exterior landing is formed with a slope away from the door, poured, and finished with a broom texture for grip. Steps are formed to code-compliant rise and run, poured monolithically where possible, and finished to match.
Install drainage outlet and test
The drainage outlet at the low point is connected to the property system or graded to daylight. The finished landing is tested with water to confirm positive flow before the site is closed up.

How the Walkout Slab Connects to the Interior
The concrete work at a walkout does not stop at the door frame. Inside, the basement slab near the new opening sometimes needs a slight pitch correction so tracked-in water drains toward a floor drain rather than sitting flat. On retrofit projects, the saw-cut around the new opening often leaves a rough slab edge that has to be patched and leveled before any interior finish goes down. A walkout opening also creates a natural opportunity to address moisture at the wall. With the exterior grade already cut and the wall face exposed, adding a waterproofing membrane or drainage board on the outside of the foundation costs far less than returning later. Yes, in many cases. Adding a walkout retrofit means cutting the existing wall to install the door, cutting the grade outside down to threshold elevation, retaining the new slope, and building the exterior landing and steps. The drawings have to confirm the structural side is feasible.
The exterior landing has to slope away from the door, and the lowest point of the cut needs a drainage outlet, either tied to the property storm system or daylighted with an engineered swale. Without it, the walkout becomes a pond every spring.
Not if they are finished with the right texture and built to the right rise and run. We finish exterior walkout steps with a broom finish or other grip texture so they shed snow and stay walkable through the freeze-thaw cycle.
