Honest budget choice
Why a Plain Concrete Patio Makes Sense for Most Las Vegas Yards
Start with what the slab actually has to do: hold patio furniture, handle foot traffic from the sliding door, and shed water away from the foundation. A broom-finished concrete patio handles all three without the premium tooling costs that decorative finishes carry. On a per-square-foot basis, plain is the starting point every other finish is priced above.
The structural work underneath a plain slab is identical to what goes under a stamped one: excavation to depth, compacted granular base, properly sloped forms, air-entrained mix, and control joints cut on a deliberate layout. Cutting corners on that prep is what causes early cracking, regardless of the surface finish. Las Vegas Concrete does not skip those steps on a plain pour any more than on a decorative one.
Plain concrete also pairs cleanly with other yard features. A concrete walkway running from the gate, a set of concrete steps off the back door, or a retaining wall along the property line all tie together without competing finishes. If the goal is a tidy, functional backyard rather than a showpiece, plain is the straightforward answer.
How it works
From Bare Ground to Finished Concrete Patio Slab in Las Vegas
-
On-site layout and slope check
We walk the yard with you, stake the patio footprint, and confirm the drainage slope. Access for the ready-mix truck is checked at this stage so there are no surprises on pour day.
-
Excavation and base preparation
Soil is cut to the required depth, compacted granular base material is brought in and packed in lifts, and forms are set to the finished elevation and slope. The base is what keeps the slab stable long-term.
-
Concrete placement and broom finish
The mix is placed, struck off flat with a screed, floated to consolidate the surface, and finished with a broom pass for traction. You choose the broom direction before the pour.
-
Saw-cut joints and cure handoff
Control joints are cut at planned intervals to guide any shrinkage cracking to predictable lines. You receive a written cure schedule showing when foot traffic and furniture loads are safe.
Choosing the right finish
How Plain Concrete Stacks Up Against Other Patio Options
Three questions narrow the choice quickly. First, what is the budget? Plain concrete costs less per square foot than any other patio finish, full stop. Second, how much upkeep is acceptable? A plain broom-finish slab needs periodic sealing (see our concrete care guide) but no resealing of stamped pattern lines or grout joints. Third, does the patio need to impress visitors or just function well day to day?
If the answer to that third question is "impress," then stamped concrete delivers slate, flagstone, or plank patterns pressed into the slab before it sets. If a natural stone look with built-in grip matters more than pattern, exposed aggregate concrete sits between plain and stamped on both cost and visual interest.
Already have a slab that is sound but cracked or stained? Patio repair and resurfacing can refresh the surface without a full tear-out. And if the project is larger than a backyard patio, our concrete cost guide breaks down pricing across all residential flatwork so you can plan the full scope.
